This is my Star Whale, Jeffrey. He is approximately 8 ft long, 3 ft wide, and weighs a lot for a plushie. He is entirely hand stitched (because I don’t know how to use a sewing machine) and is composed of 2-3 sq yards of fleece and nearly 160 ounces of polyester stuffing. It took me somewhere between 24 and 36 hours to design a pattern from only this picture and make him (I lost track of time a lot.)

I will be bringing him to Gallifrey One this year so if you see him come say hi.

I am currently making another Star Whale but this one will only be about 4 feet long (my intended size for the first.)

The Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama transformed a completely white room, including furniture, into a spectacle featuring her signature dots, helped by children who visited the exhibition over two weeks and placed brightly coloured stickers throughout the installation at the Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane. The interactive children’s project is part of Kusama’s Look Now, See Forever exhibition. Kusama will also have a major exhibition at London’s Tate Modern from 9 February.

If you live nearly anywhere on Earth and look to the southeast shortly after sunset, you’ll see the figure of Orion. Follow the three belt stars to the east, and you’ll see a bright star: Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. If it’s near the horizon, you may see it twinkling madly: flickering, dancing, perhaps even changing color.

This gave astronomer David Lynch an idea: take a time exposure of Sirius with a camera and telephoto, and purposely wiggle the mount. He tried it on January 4, 2012, and the result is the picture shown above.

As the vibrating camera caused the star to trail around, the changing colors got recorded along the track. The changing brightness of Sirius can be seen as well, as parts of the loop-de-loop fade and intensify.

The reason stars twinkle is because of our atmosphere: little blobs of air are constantly in motion. These air parcels act like lenses, and as light passes through them, the path of the ray gets bent a little bit. That’s what causes the dancing motion, the actual twinkling.
